Fixing a Faucet
Fixing a faucet can vary depending on the type of faucet and the issue you're experiencing. Here are some general steps to help you fix common faucet problems:
Tools you might need:
- Adjustable wrench
- Phillips or flathead screwdriver
- Penetrating oil (like WD-40)
- Replacement parts (cartridge, O-rings, washers, etc.)
Before you start: Turn off the water supply valves under the sink. Turn on the faucet to relieve any remaining water pressure. Cover the drain to prevent small parts from falling in.
Leaky Faucet:
Compression Faucet (two handles): Remove the handles by unscrewing them or using a screwdriver to remove the screw cover. Unscrew the packing nut and remove the stem. Check the O-ring and washer at the bottom of the stem. Replace them if they're worn out. Reassemble the faucet.
Cartridge Faucet (one or two handles): Remove the handle(s) and retaining clip or nut. Pull out the cartridge. You might need to use pliers or a special tool for this. Replace the O-rings on the cartridge if they're damaged. If the cartridge itself is faulty, replace it with a new one. Reassemble the faucet.
Ceramic Disc Faucet (one or two handles): Remove the handle(s) and escutcheon (the decorative cover). Unscrew the cylinder and pull it out. Check the neoprene seals at the bottom of the cylinder. Replace them if they're worn out. Reassemble the faucet.
Low Water Pressure: Clean the aerator (the screen at the end of the faucet spout). Mineral deposits can clog it over time. Unscrew the aerator from the faucet spout. Soak it in vinegar to dissolve mineral deposits. Scrub it gently with a brush, then rinse and reattach it.
Dripping Faucet: Follow the same steps as for a leaky faucet, as the issue is likely a worn-out washer, O-ring, or faulty cartridge.
After you finish: Turn the water supply valves back on. Slowly turn on the faucet to check for leaks and proper functioning.
If you're not comfortable doing these repairs yourself, consider hiring a professional plumber. They have the tools and knowledge to fix the problem quickly and efficiently.
